The U.S. Census Bureau has released a new interactive mapping tool for census data users called "Census Explorer." It sports updated statistics from the 2008-2012 American Community Survey (ACS), also recently released.

Powered by the Bureau's API, the application "allows users to map out different social, economic and housing characteristics of their state, county or census tract, and to see how these areas have changed since the 1990 and 2000 censuses."

Census Explorer allows users to look at eight statistics from the American Community Survey:

  1. Total population
  2. Percent 65 and older
  3. Foreign-born population percentage
  4. Percent of the population with a high school degree or higher
  5. Percent with a bachelor's degree or higher
  6. Labor force participation rate
  7. Home ownership rate
  8. Median household income
